How to Calculate the Carbon Footprint of Software Products

This post gives a short overview of how a carbon footprint may be calculated for software products. It is loosely based on our scientific paper “Integrating Aspects of Carbon Footprints and Continuous Energy Efficiency Measurements into Green and Sustainable Software Engineering”1.

Open Forum: Responsible ICT

Direct electricity use of the Internet is probably around 10% of total electricity consumption, said Jon Koomey Research Fellow at Stanford University.

That surprising fact is a reality that we often deny for the sake of New Technologies: Energy consumption and electronic waste are just the begining. In our digital world, where Internet and electronic devices are omnipresent: Which innovations will allow us to consider a more responsible future in ICT?

If you are concerned about this issue, the European Project KARIM and Cap Digital invite you to participate to the next OPEN FORUM, the meeting place for academic and private expertises and innovative SMEs across Northwest Europe.

Green Code Lab International EcoDesign Software Challenge

27th - 29th November 2013

The Green Code Lab EcoDesign Software Challenge is the opportunity for students of IT related subjects to prove their professional skills in creating ecologically sound software.

During a period of 48 hours, participating teams meet the challenge of optimizing a Java™-based multi-tier open source web application.

The organizers endowed prizes for three winning teams including help on publishing their results online and in scientific publications, but also a study trip and money.

The challenge is open for teams of three to five students. Non-student IT professionals can participate non-competitively.

The event will take place on multiple locations in France, Denmark, Spain, and Germany.

User-Centred Green Web Engineering

On the next friday, 20th September, the correspending paper to the following post will be presented during the annual 43rd annual German conference on informatics (INFORMATIK2013) in Koblenz.
See here for more information about the workshop "Environmental Informatics between Sustainability and Change" (Umweltinformatik zwischen Nachhaltigkeit und Wandel, UINW).

Although the energy consumption caused by the Internet is increasing, the potentials of optimizing online multimedia content and websites in general are not jet focussed on. Indeed, there are different possibilities how web developers as well as user can improve the energy consumption of the Internet:

Energy-efficiency of Mobile Applications

The dissertation of Claas Wilke, research assistent and PhD student at the TU Dresden, focuses on the energy-efficiency of mobile applications (apps) for smart phones and tablet PCs. The major idea is the comparison of mobile applications providing similar services w.r.t. their energy consumption. A central vision is the creation of an app store or market place that provides information on the energy consumption of all applications being sold via this market place.

For the motivational/introductory part of the dissertation he wants to include the opinion of real mobile application users, and want to investigate whether they really care about the energy consumption of mobile applications. Therefore, he is currently conduction a small online survey, consisting of 11 question, requiring about 5 to 10 minutes for completion.

Environmental Informatics and Renewable Energies

27th International Conference on Informatics for Environmental Protection - Day 3

The EnviroInfo 2013 in Hamburg closed with a day "full of Green IT" (for me). While the presentations in the first session focussed on the software side, the ones in the second part mainly dealed with hardware aspects. A big topic regarding both sides was the energy efficiency and how to improve it. The presented projects focussed on small and medium sized enterprises and came to the conclusion that there need to be a high support by providing information as well as helpful tools.

Environmental Informatics and Renewable Energies

27th International Conference on Informatics for Environmental Protection - Day 2

This second conference day on EnviroInfo 2013 can be summed up by the title "Green / Sustainable by ICT". Within different contexts the today presented paper deal with the question how we can use ICT to support a "smart world" and how it can be used to capture environmental data.

Environmental Informatics and Renewable Energies

27th International Conference on Informatics for Environmental Protection - Day 1

Starting with some facts to the history of the EnviroInfo Conference that took place for the first time in 1986 this year's conference was opened by Bernd Page in Hamburg. Until now 3.500 papers have been written by more than 8.000 authors regarding different aspects of environmental informatics.

These days the special focus is set on ICT applications for renewable energies besides the whole range of cross cutting topics in the field of environmental informatics. More information about the 118 paper submissions, lectures and workshops can be found here.

Carbon Footprints & Continuous Energy Efficiency Measurements for Green and Sustainable Software Engineering

Our new paper, that Eva will present at the EnviroInfo 2013 in Hamburg, deals with two methods and tools supporting developers by implementing Green and Sustainable Software Engineering:
  • calculating the carbon footprint of a software product based on the principles of Product Carbon Footprints but focussing on the development process of software
  • integrating ongoing energy efficiency measurements of a software product into the development process, based on Continuous Integration and in conjunction with the test driven development approach.
By applying these methods, software developers should be able to take decisions in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way within the software development process. These decisions can directly refer to the process (e.g. necessity of meetings or business trips) or they can be design decisions. Both of them have a direct impact on the environmental and social impacts of the software product.

Energy Aware Software-Engineering and Development (EASED@BUIS)

The EASED workshop will be held in conjunction with the 5th BUIS-Days: IT-based resource and energy management.

Utilization of mobile and embedded devices, and thus their induced energy consumption, is constantly increasing. Reducing the energy consumption of such devices will not only improve the carbon footprint of contemporary mobile IT usage, but will also extend the device lifetime, improve user acceptance and reduce operational costs.

Next to serious and ongoing efforts in hardware design and on operating system level, software engineering techniques will also contribute to optimize energy consumption by improving software design and software quality. The EASED@BUIS workshop, which follows up the Workshop on Developing Energy Aware Software Systems (EEbS 2012), held at the annual GI Conference in September 2012, provides a broad forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss ongoing works, latest results, and common topics of interest regarding the improvement of software induced energy consumption.

Amortization Periods of Energy Efficient Notebooks

87 years! That's the amortization period of a notebook that is 10% more energy efficient than a usual notebook.

A recent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) examines the carbon footprint of notebooks and tries to determine the time span after which a notebook should be replaced by a new one seen from an ecological point of view. The study is available in German and English language.
